Coventry City have struck a deal in principle with Eintracht Frankfurt for Switzerland international Aurele Amenda, with the fee sitting around £17m. That figure smashes the club's previous transfer record, underlining how serious Frank Lampard's ambitions truly are this summer. Promotion back to the Premier League clearly hasn't slowed the club's spending appetite. Instead, it's sharpened it.

Amenda, still just 22, arrives with genuine top-flight pedigree already forming. Standing well over six feet tall, he offers both physical presence and composure on the ball, qualities Lampard has actively sought all window. Frankfurt, meanwhile, stand to turn a healthy profit having signed him from Young Boys back in 2024. Business, ultimately, works both ways here.

Negotiations reportedly progressed quickly once Frankfurt signaled willingness to sell. A medical now awaits, pending the conclusion of Amenda's World Cup involvement with Switzerland.

Lampard identified centre-back reinforcement as an urgent priority months ago, and this move finally answers that call. Amenda started the majority of Frankfurt's closing Bundesliga fixtures last season, form that pushed him into contention for Switzerland's World Cup squad. Consistency, evidently, hasn't gone unnoticed.

Interest from elsewhere had been building steadily too, with clubs across Europe previously circling. Yet talks with Coventry moved fastest, and the player reportedly favors testing himself in England. That preference certainly helped smooth things along.

Should the move complete as expected, Amenda would become Coventry's record signing, comfortably surpassing their previous benchmark. For a newly promoted side, that's a bold statement of intent heading into a demanding campaign ahead.
