Cherries Close In on Portuguese Talent
Bournemouth are pushing hard to secure Antonio Silva, and Benfica's stance has shifted considerably in recent days. The Portuguese club offered Silva fresh terms, however he turned the extension down flatly. With just one year left on his current deal, Benfica now face a familiar dilemma. Sell now for a fair fee, or risk losing him for nothing next summer.
Unsurprisingly, they've chosen the pragmatic path. Personal terms between Silva and Bournemouth are already sorted, and talks between the clubs continue moving toward a full agreement worth around €20m. Tiago Pinto's relationship with the player, built during his previous spell in Portuguese football, has clearly smoothed negotiations considerably. Nothing gets finalized immediately though, since Benfica hope to retain Silva through their opening Europa League qualifier first.
Marco Rose's side lost Marcos Senesi to Tottenham on a free transfer recently, leaving a defensive gap that needed filling urgently. Silva represents a clear upgrade in both profile and potential.
A Bold Statement of Ambition
This move fits Bournemouth's recruitment pattern perfectly. They consistently target players before their value truly explodes across Europe. Silva, at just 22, already boasts 181 appearances for Benfica and senior caps for Portugal. His reading of the game stands out immediately, alongside genuinely composed passing from deep positions.
AC Milan previously circled, yet that interest cooled once they secured Mario Gila from Lazio instead. That left Bournemouth with a clearer path forward. Silva reportedly helped Benfica keep seven clean sheets last season, further boosting his growing reputation.
Should the transfer complete, expect Bournemouth to lean on Silva immediately within their backline structure.
